AW24/25

Newspeak AW24/25 blends archival workwear shapes with the concept of a city wardrobe. Inspired by images of Giorgio Armani campaigns shot during the early 1990s, the collection makes oversize shapes more relatable to everyday wear by keeping the notion of a layered, and therefore versatile silhouette.

This collection consists of classic menswear fabrics, such as virgin wool, cavalry twill, cotton poplin and rubberized cotton. Whether it be a long belted coat, a blanket pullover, dramatic balloon pants or a knee-length shirt - reminiscent of vintage nightshirts - every garment stands on its own, delivering a clear, yet subtle, point of view.

We used vintage Dutch army blankets to craft one-off garments. Made in limited quantities, these pieces are playful, yet versatile, a lighthearted addition to otherwise elegant silhouettes.

Our question for this collection was: How far can you dismantle familiar clothing structures while maintaining familiarity?

The designs are a playful blend of post-industrial clothing (referring to the period when menswear underwent a transition into the garments that men continue to wear to this day) and old pattern techniques found in traditional clothing from places like Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, etc. These pattern techniques focus on minimizing fabric waste, resulting in straight-cut and T-shaped patterns.

The sleeves lack an angle to provide a slimmer appearance, and the waist is not tightly fitted to the body. However, if we were to solely design garments based on old pattern techniques, they would feel relatively foreign to us, due to their volume and the absence of familiar reference points. Consider the types of collars, pockets, and cuffs we typically find in coats, shirts, jackets, and pants. These mundane details of clothing are the elements we recognize and value. We see the usage of these small details as paying homage and respect to the creative people, makers, and engineers that came up with these ideas and brought them into our lives.

Every garment in this collection started off in a vacuum, as a stand-alone piece. There is no overarching narrative, other than that told through the construction of the pieces themselves. We didn't design with the end in mind. Rather, each piece was an evolution of the last.
